The Seven Principles

The Seven Principles form the basis of Spiritualism and help Spiritualists bring together their spiritual beliefs and everyday human experience. They are guiding principles rather than strict rules, offering a framework for personal understanding, responsibility and spiritual development.

1. The Fatherhood of God

This principle expresses the idea of a universal creative intelligence that is the source of all life. It suggests that everything in existence comes from the same divine origin, and that this presence is both around us and within us. As a result, every individual carries something of that divine nature, reinforcing a sense of connection between humanity and the wider universe.

2. The Brotherhood of Man

Because all people share the same spiritual origin, humanity is viewed as one extended family. This principle encourages respect, compassion, and cooperation, reminding individuals that differences of background or belief do not alter this shared connection. It promotes the idea that supporting one another is a natural expression of this unity.

3. The Communion of Spirits and the Ministry of Angels

Spiritualism teaches that communication between the physical world and the spirit world is a natural process. This principle reflects the belief that those who have passed on can still offer guidance, comfort, and inspiration. It also recognises that there are spiritual influences working for the benefit of humanity, contributing to personal and collective growth.

4. The Continuous Existence of the Human Soul

This principle affirms that the soul continues beyond physical death. Rather than ending, life changes form, and the individual identity persists in another state of existence. This belief provides reassurance that relationships and personal identity are not lost, but continue in a different dimension of life.

5. Personal Responsibility

Spiritualism places strong emphasis on individual choice and accountability. Each person is responsible for their own actions, decisions, and development. This principle highlights the importance of making thoughtful choices, as no one else can take responsibility for, or undo, the consequences of those actions.

6. Compensation and Retribution Hereafter for all the Good and Evil Deeds done on Earth

This reflects the idea that actions have consequences, often understood as a natural law of cause and effect. What individuals do during their lives influences their spiritual growth, and there is an opportunity after death to reflect on those actions and learn from them. Rather than external judgement, the focus is on personal understanding and development.

7. Eternal Progress open to every Human Soul

The final principle emphasises that spiritual growth is ongoing and available to everyone. Development does not stop at death, but continues indefinitely, with each individual having the opportunity to improve, learn, and move forward. It reflects an optimistic belief in continual progress and the enduring potential of every soul.
